TREE ADVICE

What to Do With a Tree Damaged by a Storm

After a storm, look from a safe distance for broken tops, hanging limbs, trunk splits, uprooting, new lean, and blocked access. Avoid walking or parking beneath visibly damaged portions of the canopy.

What matters most

Minor damage may be handled through pruning, while severe structural failure can require removal. The appropriate response depends on what actually failed.

Look at the whole tree and the target

Tree decisions are not made from one symptom alone. Consider the trunk, major unions, canopy, visible roots, recent changes, storm history, and what would be affected if a branch or the tree failed. Conditions that are acceptable in an open area can be more urgent when a home, vehicle, walkway, or utility is within reach.

When professional help makes sense

If the concern involves height, large limbs, unstable wood, a tree near a structure, or anything that would require climbing or powered cutting above ground level, professional tree work is the safer route. Keep people clear of visibly unstable areas while the situation is being evaluated.
